Telephones and Mail To call the US from St. Barth, dial 00, wait for a second tone, then dial 1 plus the area code and number. To call Dutch St. Maarten from St. Barthélemy, dial 00, then 599-5, plus the 5-digit St. Maarten number. For Martinique, Guadeloupe and French St. Martin, dial direct. To reach St. Barth form other countries, the country code is 590. For local and international calls from public phones, the use of Télécartes can make connections easier and less expensive. The Télécartes, which look like credit cards, can be purchased at the Gustavia, St. Jean and Lorient Post Offices and at the gas station near the airport. Coin booths do not exist on this island. Major credit cards can be used from some phone booths for long distance calls. Postage stamps can be purchased at post offices (hours are irregular and lines can be long and slow), cafés-tabacs, at newsstands and some souvenir shops. Internet / E-Mail Some local hotels are beginning to offer internet connections from their guest rooms. Internet access is also available in Gustavia on a pay-per-minute basis.
