| REI (Recreational Equipment Incorporated) began one day in 1938 when Seattle mountaineer Lloyd Anderson sent away for a new ice axe. Upon picking it up, he got an unwelcome surprise: the axe was nearly twice the price advertised, and about half the quality. Lloyd formed REI co-op to acquire high-quality climbing and camping gear at reasonable prices. | |
